Professional Education Associations

Professional education associations are autonomous groups of educators from all levels of sectors of education. Every association has a particular area of educational interest - generally reflected in the association's title.

Association members are brought together by their passion for education and their desire to improve what is offered to their students through continued growth and development of their teaching craft in an area of shared interest.

By their membership of a professional education association, educators signal their commitment to:

  • Keeping abreast of new developments and research findings in both general education and their specialised field
  • Improving teaching and learning in their classes through constant review of all aspects of their organisation and delivery.
Some associations are broadly based, and by the nature of their objectives attract a large membership and generate enough income to eventually support paid administrative officers. This enables them to streamline their operation and provide a highly focussed service to members. However, there are many other smaller associations, which have a more specialised field of interest and a small, specialist membership. In their own modest way these associations seek to provide the same services to their members as the larger associations.

Associations operate largely on a voluntary basis, fuelled by the enthusiasm of their members.

Income generated from membership subscriptions, publications and workshop fees is channelled back into the association to provide more services for members.

Common activities of associations are professional development workshops and conferences, publications, advocacy and networking support services.
